
Even a well-designed split bushing can fail early if the application is not right. Here are the four failure modes we see most often on returned parts, and what to do about each one.
1 - Cracking Along the Split
Symptom: visible crack or chip at the slot, bushing breaks during installation
Cause: material is too brittle, or the slot is too narrow for the installation force
Fix: switch to a more ductile material (low-carbon steel or annealed stainless), open the slot width by 0.2–0.5mm, or chamfer both edges of the slot
2 - Slipping on the Shaft
Symptom: bushing rotates with the shaft instead of gripping it
Cause: shaft diameter too small, hole tolerance too loose, or insufficient surface roughness
Fix: tighten the bore tolerance to H7, add light knurling to the inner surface, or specify a higher clamping-force grade
3 - Accelerated Wear
Symptom: oval-shaped bore after a few thousand cycles, vibration and noise
Cause: misalignment, side load, or under-rated material for the load
Fix: correct the alignment, add a thrust face, or upgrade to a self-lubricating bronze or brass bushing
4 - Corrosion and Surface Attack
Symptom: red rust on carbon steel bushings, white deposits on zinc plating
Cause: wrong surface treatment for the environment, or no treatment at all on a non-stainless grade
Fix: specify zinc plating with trivalent passivation (72h salt spray), or move to 304/316 stainless for wet or marine environments
Three habits that prevent most failures
- Match the bushing material and hardness to the shaft material
- Specify a surface treatment suitable for the working environment
- Source from a supplier who can confirm material certificates and salt spray test results
